New Fifth Starter: Kyle Snyder; New Worst Blogger: Dan Shaughnessyby Cameron on March 3 at 4:52PM | comments (0)
[ comments (0) ] [ BallHype ] Well, at least he is after the first go-round. Unlike Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, both of whom scuffled atrociously over the weekend, Kyle Snyder came through with a full three innings against professional competition. Granted, that competition was the Florida Marlins and his innings included two hits and a walk. But no runs. That's a heck of a lot more than anyone could say about Lester or Buchholz in their first auditions. Unfortunately, surging sinker prospect Justin Masterson took a concerted step back, earning the loss after handing over four hits and a walk across two innings. Masterson was terrific in his first start, though optimism from that should have been tempered by the fact that he was mowing down college kids. That's certainly been rammed home now. Wahhh! Tito's already making the call on the fifth starter? Not so much, but Snyder made a good first impression, comparatively. The Sox lineup was overwhelmingly anemic for a second straight day, though this time that was likely due to a concerted lack of star power that the team brought with it on a lengthy, three-hour trip to Jupiter. Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis were the only starters to make the trip, though super-sub Alex Cora was also in attendance. Ellsbury was held hitless again, though he did notch an RBI. Youk had a base knock and Pedroia tossed out a four at-bat donut. Ho-hum. The more interesting lineup development was the use of infielder - and heretofore assumed shortstop of the future - Jed Lowrie playing third base. The much hyped prospect has played ALL OVER the infielder in Spring Training, leading some to question whether the team might have A) decided he's not best fit for shortstop and B) that they should audition him for teams in desperate need of a young infielder that is likely to bring a productive bat. Wait, is there ANY team that doesn't need a player like that? Why aren't the Sox just locking this kid in a shortstop and giving him a shot, circa a year from now if not sooner ... depending on the almost inevitable Julio Lugo combustion, of course. What is WMYM missing here? Regardless, there was one hilarious development this afternoon: Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy blogging from the game, which was a total disaster. Shaughnessy's Extra Bases line looked like this: 2 posts, 2 horrendous grammatical errors, one of which was in a headline. He may be an award-winning columnist who has made a CAREER out of the allegorical buildup and extension of a pop culture fairytale, but he's not quite the quickest on his toes, no?
