Great. Schilling's Taking us for a Ride? Again?by Cameron on February 8 at 12:01AM | comments (0)
[ comments (0) ] [ BallHype ] Alright, raise your hand if you saw this coming! You liars. NO ONE saw this coming. NO ONE thought Curt Schilling, just removed from yet another World Series, was due for another shoulder injury. Sure, there was the fatigue that sidelined him in the middle of last year. But that's a far cry from the level of rotator cuff and labrum damage that both the Boston Herald's Clubhouse Insider (Michael Silverman) and the Globe's Extra Bases (various) are reporting is currently inhibiting the erstwhile's ace's joint. So there you are. As of 8:11 p.m. we found out that the Sox have known about this since late January, which - naturally - means they've been carrying this info around since before the Santana trade went down last week. And now the team and the Big Schill are engaged in what is likely to be a psuedo-protracted face off over whether he can pitch or not. So, let's be clear: This is bullshit. If Schilling knew he was heading toward shoulder problems, why would he insist on his traditional offseason conditioning program? That's easy, it's because of the pro-rata and incentive-based contract he inked in the offseason. Now, Boston will be without the Big Schill, a man penciled in to the No. 3 role before the season even starts, until at least the All-Star Game. If they're lucky. As far as WMYM can see it, there are two relevant tangents/outcomes surrounding the Schilling developments: 1) Even if it's a bit later than optimal, it's a damn good thing this is all breaking now so that rookies and high-flyers like Justin Masterson can focus their spring training on an earlier call-up than they would have liked. Say, as soon as anyone in the rotation (cough, Wakefield, cough) goes down. But perhaps more significant is 2) WHY IN THE FUCK DIDN'T EPSTEIN OFFER UP MORE FOR SANTANA IF HE KNEW THIS SHIT WAS GOING DOWN? Look, WMYM gets it. It's all about the future. But when is adding a Cy Young winner to a World Series MVP and World Classic MVP for six+ plus years NOT in a team's best interest? Does this make sense to anyone else? Is it really all about Jed Lowrie and Epstein's insecurity about ANY shortstop he signs? Both the No. 31 and 62 "Lester" t-shirts in the WMYM wardrobe say that Jon Boy's upside is phenomenal. Like "Andy Pettitte" good. Guess what? Andy Pettitte aint Johan Santana. Period. End of story. That's ok. We're not bitter about Santana. We're bitter about Schilling missing half a season. Shit. Well, at least that's less fat pants to load into the truck on Saturday. |
